I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Western University, Canada and a Faculty Affiliate at Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. My research focuses on human-centric multiagent systems, combining methods from empirical/behavioral game theory, software engineering, human-AI and human-robot interaction. The goal of this research is to design automated AI systems that prioritize safety and reliability in specific applications, ultimately ensuring the well-being of individual users and society as a whole. Key themes of my work include:

Behavioural and Empirical game theory: How do we formalize “boundedly rational” human behaviour for automated systems that rely primarily on rational choice and utility-optimizing underpinnings? What safety risks can arise as a consequence of that? Sample publications: 1, 2, 3

Formal verification/validation of human-agent interactions: What new approaches are needed for safety validation that account for the idiosyncrasies, diversity, and unpredictability of human behavior? Furthermore, as AI agents increasingly interact with our economic, political, and social systems in unprecedented ways, what methodological frameworks are required for ensuring safe human-agent interactions at both micro and macro levels? AI-based simulation for social and economic decision-making:: The advancement of large language model (LLM)-based generative agents has opened the door in behavioural sciences to study social behaviour by running experiments in simulated environments where micro and macro-level human behaviour can be simulated through LLM cognitive agents. This line of research deals with the methodological questions around generative agent-based modelling for social and economic decision-making.

I am currently recruiting graduate students (Masters and PhD) to work on the above mentioned areas. Students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Familiarity with preliminary literature on multiagent systems is an advantage. Bio

I received my PhD from the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, where I was supervised by Prof. Krzysztof Czarnecki and worked closely with Prof. Kate Larson. Following this, I was a postdoctoral fellow for two years at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society at the University of Toronto in Prof. Gillian Hadfield’s group and a research associate with the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Prior to starting grad school, I spent eight years working in industry.

(May 2024) New paper! Drawing from human social structures of norms and institutions, our new paper shows how to design LLM-based generative agents that have capacity for cooperative behaviour. Link

(Feb 2024) New paper out on arxiv with insights on opinion and rhetoric expression in online social systems.
Main takeaway: When there is ideological polarization within a population, ideological institutions (e.g., partisan media) can distort beliefs about the outgroup population to move the expressed opinion to one extreme. Affective polarization is a by-product of this dynamic. In other words, “Institutions matter” - in online social systems too. Arxiv
